Oftentimes leaders don’t have confidential spaces or people they can confide in who don’t have an agenda. An Executive Coach can be that neutral resource and hold that space for the executive to process challenges or situations. A coach holds the client’s agenda only. A coach will also challenge in a way (that is entirely in service to the individual) that others in their life can’t or won’t. And, executives are typically analytical or in their head and a coach will explore what is more deeply aligned to their values (or heart).

I believe your resume should showcase you, your skills, and what you have accomplished - not necessarily showcase a particular title or business. So if you find yourself taking on temporary or contract assignments in between jobs, you could highlight them under a personal business name or under a category like 'independent work.'

Most executive coaches will offer a complimentary 30 minute 'chemistry' session so you can get to know the coach, their style, credentials and background. Be selective. Talk to a few coaches through referrals or your network. Check out their profile and content on LinkedIn. If they post regularly, you'll have insight into their style and how they think.

I like to ask prospects if they have a budget in mind. That helps me understand where their mindset is. I offer different pricing based on if it’s company paid or the individual is paying out of pocket. And, if the budget is limited, so is the coaching package I offer (for example, fewer sessions).

Often times, when we are doing new things and stepping outside our comfort zone, our mindset can play tricks on us. It tries to tell us that we're not ready, or we're not capable. But these are really unfounded fears. The reality is we're trying something new - we're growing and learning. Think back to another time when you tried something new. Didn't that feeling go away once you got past those initial stages? That's right, it did. And it will again. Reflect on those accomplishments and remind yourself that you have and will continue to accomplish amazing things.

One of the strongest skills you can have is learning how to manage up (or manage your boss). What?! That is right, not only is your boss managing you but you are managing your boss. A great example of this is getting alignment on expectations. If they haven't provided that clarity, it is up to you to seek it out and work with them to define expectations so that the two of you are aligned. A key way to do this is to understand what is expected of them. Ask questions, for example - What was covered in the leadership meeting they attended that may impact your area? What are their goals for the year? (and how can you support their success in achieving them) Getting curious is a great skill to have.
